Watch Dogs Has Impressive And Unique Game Mechanics But Fails To Fuel It And Provide Adequate Substance.

Watch Dogs generated quite a hype for itself in 2013 and early 2014. But it seems as if Ubisoft's brand new IP which was considered as one of the most awaited game of 2014 has failed to cater to our expectations. Initially, the game was set to release in October 2013 but the release was postponed to 2014 but it only raised the bar for fans' expectations.

But that was not it, just after Ubisoft released a story trailer for Watch Dogs, a new controversy arose that the graphics had been degraded and did not match with the early 2012 E3 gameplay footage. Watch Dogs' first glimpse at E3 2012 was totally astounding. It had some never-seen before graphics quality, wind/weather and lighting effects and other aspects were also quite stunning.

The Gameplay :-

Watch Dogs doesn't set you back on innovations. Watch Dogs has set hacking as a core gameplay mechanic and has pretty fun activities lying in Chicago for you to discover.

When it was first shown at E3, it looked like the whole Chicago had come to life, allowing to to hack anything within your range. You can pretty much hack into any electronic object, be it billboards, cameras, road blockers, spikes, and other people's smartphones by using a special software known as the 'profiler'. Watch Dogs lets you do a couple of things more but the main thing which generated more hype than anything else was the 'profiling' feature. It can allow you to peak into other people's messages using your own smartphone and even allows you to discover crimes in progress or even discover special packages for you to intercept and add to your inventory. The most amusing feature the profiler provides is that by using it, you can hack your target's bank account, stealing their money and putting it to use for your own good. It provides you with basic information about the person, be it his name, his occupation and even his recent activity. Amazingly, cameras play a much greater role in the game. In some stages of the game, you have to hack into a chain of cameras one-by-one to access a gate control panel to unlock your new objective. Hacking from camera-to-camera can be fun at times especially when you are being invaded by another hacker courtesy of Watch Dogs' unique and spectacular multiplayer.

You also have a number of options to help you stop your pursuers proving hacking to be a core-gameplay mechanism. You can raise blockers, spike-strips, burst electrical boards, raise cover, disable police helicopters and raise bridges. But that's pretty much it.

Hacking kept aside, Watch Dogs also features a vast array of weaponry for the most dangerous of situations. From shotguns to machine guns, sniper-rifles to carbines, pistols to remote and projectile explosives, Watch Dogs has everything thing to fulfill your destructive needs and these weapons are of good use if you hate stealth and have took a liking to going in all guns-blazing. Instead of fist-fighting, you have a baton which can help you subdue criminals non-lethally.

Well, I mentioned Watch Dogs' multiplayer earlier and there is pretty much everything you can praise about it. It features an inbuilt, ''always-on" multiplayer just like the game's tagline - "Everything is connected". Players can hack you anywhere-anytime (If........you have an internet connection). It might sound complex but is simple if you get the hang of it. When you are being hacked by a player, you need to find where he is hiding and pump him full of bulllets. Players can even use automobiles to follow and hack their victims. It even features competitive-car racing and even an interesting points-based notoriety system.

The Bad Points :-
  1.  Many hacking abilities require you to progress to a certain point in the story line and have adequate points which only brings down the cool ''everything is hackable'' reputation of the game.
  2.  We know that Ubisoft has added enough detail to Watch Dogs' NPCs but it would've been better if there was something more to them except hacking their bank accounts and accessing their messages. Also, I did not find the reputation system much rewarding. I did not feel it was even rewarding. It felt dull so I did not give much importance to it. It could've made itself more noticeable by adding events that follow your contribution to the betterment or the destruction of the city.
  3. The much talked-about being ''a true next-gen" experience, I feel that it's graphics are not that deserving of the hype. I would extremely recommend that you play Watch Dogs on either next-gen console, or on a good PC.
  4. You must've heard about Watch-Dogs' driving experience. Well, it's not exactly like Forza or Gran Turismo but then the game was not solely a driving game. The driving feels okay only after you've played it for a certain amount of time and have gotten used to it. I personally feel that the single-player mode should have featured car customization. The skill tree driving upgrades included higher damage to cars from shotguns which felt strangely stupid to me.

Watch Dogs boldly lays out it's features to you and offers tons of activities and places for you to explore. It also has a tower-unlocking system similar to Far Cry 3. I don't bear any grudges against Ubisoft but I had an inner-feeling that Watch Dogs did not meet the level of expectations even though it provided a good lively city and an okay storyline. Watch Dogs is a good open-world game which you can enjoy. I would not say it was the best game I ever played but it was not the worst. I would recommend it to every one who is an open-world games fanatic.
